More About
Crowns, Onlays, Inlays and Bridges
A dental crown (or cap) encircles a tooth or dental implant to protect the tooth structure, and restore the normal functional and aesthetic contour of the tooth. With current technology, a crown could be made with precision within a few hours.
A crown is recommended when a tooth cannot be restored effectively with fillings or other types of restorations. Although there are several types of crowns, the most popular choice is porcelain (tooth-coloured) crown It is natural-looking, strong and fabricated with precision.
In the past, a crown would take 2 appointments over one week’s time to complete, during which a patient would need a temporary crown on a tooth. With new technology, we are now able to provide patients with a new long-lasting crown within several hours.
Porcelain crowns are highly durable and will last for many years, but like any dental restorations, they may eventually need to be replaced due to tear and wear. Good oral hygiene practices, eating habits, and regular dental visits will aid in the longevity of your new dental restorations.
Some reasons you may need crowns: Tooth has undergone root canal treatment, broken or fractured teeth, decayed teeth, fractured fillings, to strengthen a tooth or cosmetic enhancement.
FAQ: What’s the difference between a crown and an onlay, inlay or bridge?
One commonality between a crown, inlay and onlay is that they are all prepared outside of your mouth, then are permanently cemented onto the tooth by your dentist.
An Onlay is sometimes referred to as partial crown because it covers less tooth structure than a crown and conserves more of your natural tooth.
An Inlay is similar to onlay except it does not cover any of the chewing cusps.
Bridges enhance cosmetic and strengthen the tooth. They are very thin pieces of durable, custom-made tooth-shaped porcelain that are bonded onto the front of teeth to create a beautiful smile.
