Dental Bridge or Implant? How We Choose the Right Tooth Replacement

When you’re missing a tooth, two of the most common replacement options are a dental bridge and a dental implant. Both can beautifully restore your smile, but they work in fundamentally different ways—and the right choice depends on your specific dental health, goals, and budget.

A dental implant replaces a tooth from root to crown. A small titanium post is placed in the jawbone, where it fuses with the bone to create a sturdy, independent foundation. A custom crown is then attached on top. Because it replaces the root, an implant helps preserve the bone in your jaw and doesn’t require any work on neighboring teeth. It’s the most durable, natural-feeling option, but it requires surgery and a longer healing timeline.

A dental bridge, by contrast, relies on the teeth on either side of the gap for support. Crowns are placed on those teeth to anchor the artificial tooth in between. A bridge can be completed more quickly, usually without surgery, but it does require reshaping otherwise healthy neighboring teeth to serve as supports.

So which is right for you? If you have healthy surrounding teeth and prefer a faster, non-surgical solution, a bridge may be ideal. If you want to preserve maximum tooth structure and a long-lasting, standalone restoration, an implant may be the better investment. Bone density, overall oral health, and timeline all play a role.
